The Plains just expired on Mubi. [sorry..] Better not to watch any interviews with the director beforehand. An inkling that it may be a bit scripted, pre-thought, yet with brilliant simplicity one’s never sure. A 3hour melancholy of mundanity, interestingly not inherent in its protagonists. Rather what is engendered perhaps in the viewer. Nothing happens. One lawyer gives another younger guy, verge of sitting bar exams, a 45min lift home in Victoria, Australia. Several times. They talk. Nothing remotely provocative. Strangely, unnervingly riveting. Childhood, family, existence all inexplicably bubble up in the observer: we are literally in the back seat. Adult as child. Neither eerie nor disturbing; strangely comforting like an old radio serial you may miss next week. And strangely it seems so non-American. For the latter there would be a penultimate exteriority. Nor European existentialism. Nor Jafar Panahi’s Taxi. The Plains, intuitively, the exterior always present interior. What you make it. Something very very Australian. And strangely Brechtian!
