Amongst the Master Drawings crowd Hercules Segers is a household name, to others he sounds like a new Spandex hero. The Met Museum is opening a show that just closed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. There’s an introductory video narrated by Dutch old master enthusiast John Malkovich (actor) and these amazing plate prints of Segers. Only one actually drawing survives (think I got that right). This isn’t Bosch or Dali or any number of other strange paper space travelers you might think of. In fact the Met really should have a magnifying glass on hand. No strange creatures: just a man so obsessed in drawing the minutia of our world as if it were about to vanish using techniques that nobody else ever considered.

What the RP show offers up needs reflection and focus. (well…I know u r jealous but I got to sit with and relatively alone for hours. But as R.P. would maybe say F you’re Life I got T. P. ! ) ‘) Pettibon will never be a wasted visit. You may hate, loathe, love, adore, stop: dismiss. But You will have a reaction. There could not be indifference to R.P. cartoons aren’t comics. But the best travel on. Comics aren’t necessarily art. But the best travel on. Weirdo’s aren’t the best dinner guests nor bed fellows but the best travel on.
