Margaret Juntwait ‘voice’ of the Met Opera for the past decade (very important turbulent era in the survival history of opera) passed away this morning. We’ll never know how good a lyric soprano she was. She gave up her career to raise a family and then engendered more ‘life’ as a radio presenter of the Met Opera broadcasts. Playing second fiddle in this world ain’t all that bad. At least you get ‘air play’. Fantastic young singers can be found warbling in the New York parks over the next month or so. If Central Park is too crowded for you then a sublime location is Brooklyn Park. And if the weather starts to fail fear not: you may even catch a glimpse of the ‘Flying Dutchman’ afloat the NYC skyline.
