And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges

If you're a night owl, there are but few more hours to see The Royal National Theater's streaming Twelfth Night on their YouTube channel. There's not a member of that cast that doesn't do justice to Sir Laurence Olivier's stage. And wow is this a production (not just in set design/costumes etc) that proves how contemporary was Shakespeare! It's a strange and difficult play to pull off. The female casting of the male Malvolio(a) totally works. There always seem to be desperate sadnesses in Shakespeare's plays. Do we read too much into a contemporary Malvolio character? Don't think so. Is Shakespeare the greatest dramatist of dissecting cruelty and its polar opposite love in the same breath? Discuss.

Not feeling very funny today as the rain drizzles down and my mind paces up and down like a cat 'padding' on the sofa yet never able to settle. Can't seem to get Twelfth Night out of my head! The last time I saw this play must have been the Branagh film. Indeed a comedy but in the same way Ricky Gervais' comedy is deeply sad and painfully observant of reality.

Soprano Jessye Norman, who passed away last October, celebrates the great Johannes Brahms in 1997-Live From Lincoln Center.
Extraordinary (that ought be ordinary) music making. Pinchas Zukerman: you must listen. If that Brahms chamber music isn't contemporary then, really, what is?! I would argue that: if you can't play a, one note, that truly means something, then, please: don't play any other notes. They will simply be noise!

Those who missed The Met Opera's Maria Stuarda (Donizetti) missed an amazing experience. Bizarre that this was the first ever staging at The Met. Proof that much of the bel canto repertoire is far from dinosaur relegation. (A 'thumbs up' for the two queen actresses, sorry. actors in the Thalia Theater's Mary Stuart (Schiller). I would never had seen your work if it hadn't been for Covid, the ironies of life. A Thalia production archive is uploaded everyday (for 24hours). All in German. Your Romeo and Juliet 'blew my mind', and that of Kitty the singing cat.
