25 years ago, Princess Diana died in a Paris car crash. Impossible to capture photographically the outpouring of flowers, words, stuffed toys, moreover, the silence in Kensington gardens those following weeks. Wind wafting a balloon. How do you photograph the silence of grief? Here was an unwitting artwork by the people, an extraordinary outpouring of emotion albeit oft a transference of their own mortal griefs. Diana would never have wanted anyone to suffer. Here was an enormous island of tears. Love. Beyond, a dog eat dog world that inexorably ate away at the Princess herself.
Spencer is an elegiac, wistful, demure, angry film that whispers more than hides. Celebrating joy than despair. Are we such stuff as dreams are made on?, asks the film. Inevitably our life is rounded by a sleep.
Surely, one of the greatest songs in the pantheon…meow!
P.S. Fear that I needs explain this website in an age of consumptive consumption. The scripted sections: ANDREW and KITTY are in a TV series inside ANDREW’s head. Fictional characters may sometimes bear a resemblance to real life, the talking cat, of course;)! Real life celebrities who appear in the script are still in the mind of the script creator. Ofttimes in dream sequences. There is never an intention to make fun of said. Leave that up to greater’ comedic minds;) What would be the point of that in this context. If folk start to ask questions, great. If folk are judgmental and assume the script is somehow politically biased or…then another TV show is most probably for you. No pressure. Plenty more out there.
Guess folk like Alan Menken gets what I do- old school, new ears. Brian Cox gets it. Billie Eilish. A few other folk whose lives I have no wish to ruin. Tina Fey totally got it. Thank you. I don’t lose sleep at night dreaming of a Grammy or some other metallic substance that may well lower my chi. Thank goodness, would probably have a terrible ending.:) Less social media. More piano practice and chi!
